Catharine started volunteering with a friend who rehabbed animals and 10 years later, she and the other home care rehabbers and volunteers of Helping Hands for Wildlife care for about 200 animals every year, many of them babies, some only days old. They take in all mammals in need of care and Catharine specializes in opossums, bats, raccoons and foxes. There are some that can be saved, some that sadly cannot, and of course every year there are certain animals who touch your heart – like a orphaned baby raccoon who, months after release, came back to say hello. Raccoon rehabbers face special challenges due the costs and space required to care for them, and for Catharine it’s truly a labor of love.
