While working at a nature center as a naturalist, Katherine would often receive phone calls about orphaned baby wildlife that needed help. She knew wildlife rehabbers through her job and began to think of taking it on herself. Her first rehab experience was caring for a Great Horned owlet. After that, Katherine was hooked and there was no turning back. She now cares for baby raccoons, squirrels, birds and rabbits, about 20 each season. She says that there's something about looking into the eyes of an orphaned/sick or injured critter, knowing that they are getting the help they need, and they're not alone, scared, cold or hurting anymore. When Katherine releases animals back into the wild it brings a flood of emotions and often tears of joy. It's such a beautiful thing.
