After getting out of the Army in 1998, Rebecca decided to pursue her passion and work with animals. She started out by working for a local animal shelter then she worked for a veterinarian who frequently had people bringing him injured or orphaned wildlife. The first major case was a litter of 5 squirrels that had their tails seriously knotted and needed to have them surgically untangled. It was a triumphant moment when he freed the last one and then came the hard part -- what to do with them now? Rebecca's mother (also being an avid animal lover) was in the process of becoming a wildlife rehabber so she took the babies on, successfully raising them until they were old enough to be out on their own. Soon after, Rebecca became licensed as well, mostly concentrating on emergency care of non-migratory birds, squirrels, chipmunks and groundhogs. She hopes to expand now that her children are starting school. It's so important to Rebecca not to just rehab animals but to also to safely teach children how important it is to help those in need.
