The other year I saw a raccoon lying on the edge of the road I live off of that must have been hit by a car earlier in the day. I pulled over to check on them and to my surprise the raccoon was alive! I started making some calls to try to get him help but only the police would come because it was a raccoon. They told me they had to euthanize because adult raccoons usually can’t be rehabilitated plus this raccoon was paralyzed. In the hours I spent waiting and keeping the raccoon warm with a towel (and wearing thick work gloves for protection) he seemed soothed by my presence. The next day I realized I was hooked and started reaching out to wildlife organizations I could volunteer with and sadly there were almost none in my area that would take raccoons. I heard about how many perfectly healthy baby raccoons had to be euthanized each night by midnight when there wasn’t a wildlife rehabber to take them. I knew I wanted to prevent that! Now having taken part in rehabilitating and successfully releasing baby raccoons and foxes that would have died without human help, I know how deeply rewarding it is to help!
