Nichole A.

My journey into wildlife rehabilitation started through my work as an Animal Control Officer. While responding to calls, I saw firsthand how many injured and orphaned wild animals had nowhere to go and how much dedication it takes to give them a second chance. I knew I wanted to be apart of that effort, so I began volunteering as a wildlife transporter and subpermittee in early 2025.

What started as volunteering quickly became a passion. I began spending time at the wildlife clinic every week sometimes multiple times a week, learning from experienced rehabilitators and veterinarians, helping care for patients, transporting animals, collecting donations and supplies, and doing everything I could to support the mission. I eventually earned my Level 1 wildlife rehabilitation permit and now care for orphaned and injured wildlife myself.

The patients that have captured my heart the most are baby opossums. They are often misunderstood, but they are incredibly important to our ecosystem, and completely dependent on us when they lose their mothers. Watching an animal arrive tiny, dehydrated, and vulnerable, then grow stronger and eventually being released back into the wild, is one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had.

Wildlife rehabilitation isn’t just a hobby for me anymore, it’s something I’m deeply committed to. Every animal deserves the opportunity to heal and return to where it belongs, and I’m grateful to play a small part in making that happen.
