I became a wildlife rehabber because I’ve always felt a deep calling to care for the animals that share our world. In February 2024, I began volunteering with Appalachian Wildlife Refuge, Candler, NC, under the sponsorship of Savannah Trantham, and I’m currently studying for my Certificate in Wildlife Rehabilitation with the Animal Behavior Institute.

Living in Western North Carolina, I’ve fallen in love with all our native species: from tiny rabbits to playful gray squirrels, curious opossums, and sturdy little groundhogs. And flying squirrels (who are secretly my favorite) have completely stolen my heart with their bright eyes and gentle nature. The first time I syringe-fed an orphaned baby, I knew this was the work I was meant to do. Watching them grow strong and return to the wild is one of the greatest joys of my life.

In September 2024, as I had just nicely set up a rehab room in our home, Hurricane Helené hit, and we lost our home and all of our belongings when the Swannanoa River rose to 38 feet. Thankfully, we were able to evacuate safely with six baby flying squirrels in my car, all of whom were later released successfully. But the storm destroyed everything I had for rehabbing: my equipment, supplies, and even my study books. Rehabbing orphaned and injured wildlife has been profoundly healing for me since losing our home. I’ve found my true calling and want to set up as a full-time rehabber and, ultimately, as a wildlife educator for children and adults.
