Days after my 20-year-old son, Shay, died in a car crash, I stumbled upon an orphaned squirrel. As I began to care for this tiny and vulnerable creature, I discovered that, in helping it heal, I was also finding a way to start the process of healing myself.
Two and a half years ago, I took early retirement to purchase my 107-acre property and have turned it into the largest raccoon rescue in the state of Missouri. I rescue, raise, and release 70-plus raccoons and 40-plus opossums, skunks, woodchucks, and fox per year.
